Why foundations move
It is usually the soil, not the concrete
Most foundation problems start underneath the house. Clay soils swell when they soak up water and shrink when they dry out, so a foundation built on them rises and falls with the weather. Other soils compress under the weight of the house, wash out around leaking pipes or were never compacted properly when the lot was graded. When one part of the foundation moves more than another, the house starts to show it.
The warning signs are easy to recognize once you know them: stair-step cracks in brick or block, drywall cracks that angle out from door and window corners, doors that stick or will not latch, gaps between walls and ceilings, and floors that slope or feel bouncy.

How do I know if a crack is serious?

Does homeowners insurance cover foundation repair?
